Poiema is a small studio. Alex Wilton scopes the work, designs the architecture and stays accountable for it. Senior developers on retainer do the day-to-day shipping. There are no juniors billed as seniors and no account managers between you and the engineer.
The name
Poiema is Greek. It means a thing that has been made, with the sense of good workmanship behind it. The company started in London in 2020 as Poiema Ltd, with a few consulting engagements that grew into a small agency. It moved with Alex to Texas in 2024 and re-incorporated as Poiema Solutions LLC.
How it is staffed
Alex is the technical director on every engagement. He reviews the architecture, sets the standards and stays accountable for the result. Retained senior developers do the shipping. Some have worked with Poiema for years, and the team grows as clients do.
This is deliberately not a large agency. It means we take on a limited number of retained clients at a time, and each of them gets a named engineer who knows their codebase.
Where we work
Alex is in Austin, Texas. The team is remote, with senior developers in the UK and the US. Clients are across the United States and the United Kingdom. Meetings run on your time zone. Invoices in dollars or pounds, whichever you prefer.
Ten years, in order
- 2016Bloomberg, London. React Native and backend services for the Professional mobile app used by over three hundred thousand clients.
- 2018Kraken Futures, London. Full-stack development and production deployments through the nine-figure acquisition by Kraken.
- 2020Poiema founded in London. Consulting and contracting, then a small team building for fintech, edtech and automotive clients.
- 2021First engagement for the UK Foreign Office through Caution Your Blast: a consular travel portal in React and serverless Node.
- 2022A year on Bloomberg's Data License platform through Dom & Tom. People Bunch becomes a client.
- 2023Back at the Foreign Office to design and ship a public-facing generative AI service, one of the UK government's earliest in production.
- 2024Moved to Austin, Texas. Poiema re-incorporated as Poiema Solutions LLC.
- 2026A US company now, with a remote senior team in the US and UK. Retained engineering and managed hosting.
